Kolkata Traffic Police to train sergeants in e-challan app

The Kolkata Traffic Police has announced that all sergeants of 25 guards will be trained to use the e-challan app before the complete switch to the online system of collecting fines from motorists and bikers.

The move comes after the successful implementation of the e-challan system by four traffic guards, including South, Headquarter, Howrah Bridge, and Jorabagan. Five officers each from 21 other guards are currently using the online system to prosecute violators of traffic rules.

The police aim to have all sergeants learn the online system to take turns collecting fines. An officer stated that this would streamline the fine collection process and reduce the workload of officers. The e-challan system is also expected to reduce corruption by eliminating the need for direct cash transactions between violators and police officers.

According to the police, the e-challan system has been successful in reducing traffic violations and accidents in areas where it has been implemented. The system issues fines electronically and also provides violators with a photograph of the offence committed.

The online system of fine collection has also helped the police maintain social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic by reducing direct contact between violators and police officers.
